Woven Leather Purses for Every Day

If you want a woven leather purse that sits on your shoulder and stays put, start with the Stella hobo. It has a soft slouch, an adjustable buckle strap and a top zip across a wide opening. The raw, unlined interior keeps it featherlight.

The Isabel is a hand-woven shoulder bag with an 11" drop that tucks neatly under your arm. It’s fully lined, and in black or brown it looks polished enough for the office.

For a smaller purse, the Cate closes with a drawstring and hangs from a hand-knotted strap you can wear on the shoulder or across the body. Two-tone grey or cognac leather gives it a lived-in look right away.

For everyday woven leather crossbody bags, the Coast and Catalina are both soft-woven and fully lined. Coast is a slim zip-top whose strap comes off when you want a clutch. Catalina is a small bucket bag with a beaded drawstring.

Tess has a knotted macramé front, cut-out top handles and a detachable strap, so you can carry it by hand at lunch and wear it crossbody on the walk home.

• Hand-woven: leather strips woven across the whole bag for all-over texture. Studio, Isabel, Stella, Shay and Scout.
• Soft-woven: a pliable weave that gives when you squeeze it. Coast and Catalina.
• Macramé: knotted leather across the front. Tess and the Randall wallet.
• Herringbone and fringe: a zigzag weave finished with fringe. Grace, Grit and the Glory clutch.
• Open-weave: a looser, airier weave. Brigitte.

Lining comes down to how you carry. Coast, Catalina, Isabel, Theo and Clover are fully lined, which keeps keys and lip balm organized. Stella, Studio, Shay and Scout have raw, unlined interiors, so they’re lighter and show leather inside and out.

Either way, the strips are full-grain leather, the top layer of the hide with its natural grain intact. That’s why the weave softens and builds a patina as you carry it.

Caring for a Woven Leather Bag

• Clean with a soft cloth that’s barely damp, then let the bag air-dry.
• Full-grain leather doesn’t need routine conditioning. If your bag ever feels dry, work a little leather conditioner into the strips with your fingertips and wipe any extra from the gaps.
• Store it stuffed with tissue in a breathable dust bag, away from direct sun, and the weave stays full and even.
